Please print out the relevant forms and complete and return them with any club fees and the Parent Support deposit by Monday, August 20, 2012.

Here is what you can expect when you go to see the King Tut exhibit at the Pacific Science Center.

Jordy says “[t]he rooms glow with artifacts that are detailed and colorful.”

Ally liked and recommended the cat sarcophaguses.

Parker was interested in how they buried people and pharaohs differently. He suggests seeing the documentary.

Ryan recommends that you stay back and let the crowd go ahead so that you can look at all the intricate art.

Clay learned that the Egyptians had indoor plumbing.  He also liked the documentary.

Santana was taken with the gold mask.  He recommends that you not eat the corn dogs.

Alex suggests that you also take in the puzzle room, which houses a giant rubric cube.

Sarah learned that Eygpt still has mummies buried in the ground.  She had a lot of fun and wish the exhibit would stay.

Kara encourages you to take you time and enjoy the exhibit.  She said that some of “[t]he statues are in good condition while others are beaten up. “

Aiden liked the cat and the burial mask.  He recommends reading Pyramids by Terry Pratchett before you go.

For decades humans have been obsessed with the idea of conscious computers; artificial intelligences that think, imagine, and maybe even feel. As technology nears this goal–called the Singularity–we’re forced to consider the greater implications of such a being. Hillside Senior Alex Nolan explores these in her short play, Counting Up From Singularity.

Alex Nolan wrote the play as her senior project for Hillside. It stars herself and Katie Santos, Counting Up From Singularity will be shown one night only, on June 1st at 7:30 pm, at Hillside Student Community. Admission is free, so please join us for this event!

This weekend Hillside’s Alex Nolan will be Dogberry in Studio East’s production of Much Ado About Nothing  by William Shakespeare.

Dogberry is the clueless, clowning constable who saves the day despite his incompetence in this comedy about two pairs of lovers, Benedick and Beatrice, and Claudio and Hero.  This master of  malapropism is one of Alex’s favorite Shakespearean clowns and she is very excited to be playing him.

The performances are May 4th at 7:30, May 5th at 2:30 and 7:30, and May 6th at 2:30. Tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE.

Alex encourages Hillside students to come and enjoy this performance – especially those who are going to be in Kael’s Shakespeare class.  Sounds like fun homework!

Do you and your family enjoy the outdoors? Whether it’s hiking, camping or wilderness backpacking, boating, kayaking or river rafting, we live in a wonderful place to explore and interact with the natural world.

Some people avoid getting away from civilization because they are worried about what can go wrong when they are so far from the services and safety nets of urban life.

When things go wrong and plans go awry, there are some basic principles, priorities and skills that will see you through. It doesn’t really matter if you are backpacking deep in the North Cascades wilderness, your car breaks down on a forest backroad after a family picnic on the Olympic Peninsula, or your canoe overturns while paddling the Columbia River – these principles always apply.

Learning about basic survival skills helps build the self-confidence to undertake adventures throughout your life, and this knowledge will benefit you in any situation where things go wrong.

Over two afternoons in the second week of the camp, we will learn the most important survival skills, with hands-on practice in the woods of the Hillside campus:

• Sheltercraft – how to protect yourself from weather and the environment
• Firecraft – how to reliably start a warming and signal fire, even in wet weather
• Water Procurement – how to find water and make it safe to drink
• Signaling – how to call for help and let rescuers know where you are
• First Aid – how to take care of basic injuries and illnesses
• Navigation – how to use a map, compass and GPS to find your way

We will also demonstrate the fundamentals of planning to avoid emergency situations in the first place, and show how to assemble survival and emergency kits.

Smart people are aware of what can go wrong in life. Wise people prepare for it, and this preparation gives them the confidence to try anything, and deal with whatever life throws at them.

Mark Anderson is a professional firefighter who teaches emergency preparedness and safety. He learned survival skills as a youth in Scouting, and developed them while serving in the Army, including as a survival instructor and a graduate of the Army’s most advanced survival schools.

Discover acting secrets – how to laugh without laughing gas, to cry without onions.

Create your own short plays. Rehearse and perform scenes from classic theatre. Explore characters of depth and complexity. Visit the balconies of Verona, the avenues of Paris, the back alleys of London and the mean streets of New York. What is the meaning of life? The secret of happiness? The recipe for Coca Cola? Drama camp will answer these questions and others that have long puzzled humanity.

Our two week session will culminate with a free-wheeling evening performance, during which all we’ve discovered will be revealed to an invited audience of family, friends, and acquaintances.
