Nick is a member of the Rainier Youth Choirs. The RYC has been asked to sing back up on Mr. Manilow’s performance of One Voice. The message of the song is that “One Voice” can change the world which is certainly something we believe at Hillside.

If you can’t make the concert, you can experience the song by watching the YouTube video of Mr. Manilow’s performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in 2010.

Saturday, Jan. 12  Open House 1:00-3:30 pm

As announced in the January Bulletin, we have an open house this Saturday from 1 – 3pm. If you know of any interested families for next year or perhaps further down the line, please encourage them to use this opportunity to meet the faculty and learn about the school.

Enthusiastic Hillside families (past and present) have proven to be our most effective ambassadors about Hillside’s program to the broader community.  Thank you for passing on the word!

Wednesday, Jan. 16  Parent Council Meeting 7:00-8:30 pm

All Hillside Student Community Parents, past and present, are invited to participate in Hillside’s Parent Council.  Come share your ideas with other parents, alumnae, and staff.  Your feedback on our program and ideas about strengthening our community are integral to Hillside’s well being. Several recent changes are a direct result of these conversations. We hope to see you there!

This year’s Yule Ball celebrated American culture and music throughout the 20^th  century, beginning in the roaring 1920s and progressing forward to the 1990s. Students were encouraged to wear appropriate attire from any relevant decade that  they desired. But regardless of what era, a good time was had by all. Thanks to Jean for all these wonderful pictures.

This is definitely the “antidotal” alternative to the usual holiday fare—which veers between the evocative and the humorous, all delivered by some of Seattle’s favorite professional actors. Frank Corrado, Megan Cole, Paul Dorpat, and Jean Sherrard read unconventional holiday fare. Leslie Braly and John Owen provide music. Presented by Town Hall with A Contemporary Theatre; hosted and curated by Jean Sherrard.

HILLSIDE’S  GRAND  CHRISTMAS  JUBILEE!  

Organized By  the  youth,  for  the  youth,  and led  by  Daniel  Riesco,  we  shall  be  holding  a ceremonious  event,  which  we  call

    THROUGH THE AGES  

Which  celebrates  American  culture  and  music throughout  the  20^th  century,  beginning  in  the roaring  1920s  and  progressing  forward  to  the 1990s.  We  humbly  suggest  wearing  appropriate attire  from  any  relevant  decade  that  you desire.

Students  are  allowed  to bring  one  guest  each.

In  order  to  attend,  each  guest  must  have Hillside’s  Guest  Waiver  signed  by  the appropriate  staff  at  his  or  her  school  and have  turned  the  waiver  in  to  Susan  Wedgwood by  the  morning  of  Thursday,  December 20. The Hillside  Guest  Waiver  can  be  found  on  the website or by clicking HERE and  is  available  on  the  table  next  to the  copy  machine  in  the  hall.  Invite  your friend,  sibling,  uncle,  or  romantic  interest – just  make  sure  that  s/he  has  the  waiver signed  and  it  has  been  turned  in  to  Susan  by the  morning  of  the ball, Thursday,  December 20!

Students  shall  soon  receive  the  invitation, including  details  on  bringing  delicious confectionaries  to  the  potluck.

GAMES AND OTHER DIVERTING AMUSEMENTS

Here  at  HILLSIDE’S GRAND JUBILEE  we  offer  such  amusing  diversions  as  the  following  games.

•       Musical chairs!

•       Rob   Your  Neighbor  (of   his  present!)—In  which  presents  brought  and  wrapped  are  placed  evenly  around  the  circle,   and  when  one  rolls  a  six  using  a  DICE,  one  may  either  take  or  steal  a  present  from  a  conniving  adversary.

•       Improvisational Games—In  which  our  host  Mr.  Riesco  leads  a  series  of  relevant  improvisational  dramatics.

•       Dancing—In  which the  youth  of  the  event  may  participate  in  a  DANCE  of  the  ever-changing  popular  music  of  the 20^th  century—from  THE CHARLESTON  to  THE TWIST.

•       And  one  last  enthralling,  superb,  incredible  EVENT—which  shall  remain  secret  until  the  end  of  the  evening!

Not only is Grayson growing and sleeping occasionally, an article which Laura co-authored on her Master’s thesis research was published in the journal, Northwest Science this fall.  Now that is a full schedule!

Hillside’s 2013 European Tour: July 15 – 29

Thinking about joining Hillside’s Europe Trip this summer?

So far we have eight students who have signed up for the trip.  The minimum needed is ten.  So if your student wants to go but hasn’t submitted the initial application form please do so as soon as possible.  (Click HERE to get a PDF of the form.)  Jean and Kael want to start firming up the travel itinerary and lock in plane tickets and hostel reservations.

Hillside’s Summer Discovery Program will not be held this summer.

Due to the scheduling of the European Tour, Hillside will not be hosting camp this summer.  If you are looking for a good alternative, consider going to the Parent Map Camp Fair where you can learn about a wide variety of options.  We hope that this doesn’t inconvenience families too much.

Don’t forget our Art Fair/Family Film Night on December 14th!

Hillside students will be displaying and selling their arts and crafts on December 14^th from 5 to 7 pm right before the showing of Galaxy Quest.  (See the December school bulletin for information about the movie.)    This is a great opportunity to support our budding artists as well as Hillside.  Hope to see you there.  Refreshments will be served. (Cash and checks only please.)
