What’s Happening at Hillside…
Spotlight on
First Day
Welcome to everyone joining our community, and welcome back to everyone returning! This year, we bonded through newspaper tower construction, prompting us to reflect on trial, error, and revision. We also inaugurated the first day with a Russian tradition, where the oldest and youngest student at a school together ring a bell to start Hillside’s 51st year. It is wonderful to be back!
Volunteer Opportunity
Brynne is cooking up a storm with the Cooking Elective—and could use a few parental hands to help in the kitchen. Please contact her if you are interested.
Fiber ART
From Leslie:
I had a marvelous re-entry into the craft show circuit at the BAM Artsfair over the summer. Warm thanks to those of you who were able to stop by. I’m flattered to now be in several of your collections. I’ve updated my Etsy site with critters you’ve never seen me turn out before: needle felted and excelsior stuffed mohair (which is the direction in which I want to go). It would warm the cockles of my heart if you took a gander

Poem Publication
Last spring the 9th grade Literature class wrote sonnets in the pattern of Shakespeare on topics of their choosing. Lily’s poem, “Painted Sheep,” stuck in Sigrid’s brain and heart so much that she shared it at a staff meeting. Brynne was so moved that she asked Lily’s permission to send it out for possible publication, and we are so thrilled to share with Hillside that Lily Maltz’s sonnet, “Painted Sheep,” was selected by award-winning poet Koon Woon to be published in the 2020 Chrysanthemum Poetry Anthology.
Curriculum Night
This Thursday, 9/13, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. is your chance to learn about classes, teachers, and plans for the school year. You will go through an abbreviated school day, and have a chance to ask any questions you have. Please plan to attend with your student(s).
Want More Fencing?
This photo includes three world champions (back row, Ellen O’Leary, 3rd from left, Jane Eyre, 5th from left, Wang Yung, 6th from left) and one qualifier (Jeff Gueble, 4th from left) for world championships in Cairo this October who were training at Hillside Cavaliers. Ellen and Jeff will continue training and sparring with other Hillside fencers (Grace, Holly, Dwayne, Erik, Patrick, Linda, Kael, and any others who wish to join us) on Thursday evenings starting at 7:00. Coach Wang will return to train all who want lessons Nov. 13-18.
