What’s Happening at Hillside
Spotlight On…
School Safety—Peanuts and Parking
Every parent wants their student(s) safe at school, and it is in your power to help ensure the safety of your student(s) and others! To that end, please read below for reminders about school policies.
1. NO PEANUTS OR PEANUT PRODUCTS AT SCHOOL
We have students with severe peanut allergies, and incidental peanut contact can cause a serious health event. I know it is frustrating to avoid peanuts, but consider how a few minutes and product substitutions on your end can avoid devastating results for other families.
2. NO U-TURNS OR PARKING IN CUL-DE-SAC
Driving into and turning around in the cul-de-sac is not responsible. We have had several narrow misses between cars and pedestrians. Please do not drive into the cul-de-sac. Parking there is for staff and local houses. Instead, park along SE 50thor 159th. Then, when you resume driving, continue in the direction you were facing and loop through the neighborhood, which does not take more time or require a dangerous U-turn.
Brynne Performs in Washington State Premiere
Hillside teacher and local actress Brynne Garman is back onstage at the University of Washington in a play based on the real-life story of Ada Byron Lovelace, known as the first programmer in history. Ada and the Engine, written by award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson, combines music, poetry, mathematics and romance – it’s as if Jane Austen met up with Steve Jobs. If any of these topics entice you, please reserve a ticket for just $10.00 here.
Play is at the Cabaret Theatre in Hutchinson Hall, 7:30 p.m., October 30, 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
Open House
Our first Open House of the school year is days away! We hope that you can join us to spend some time with our community, and we encourage you to share Hillside with any families looking for the right fit for their students. Our community members are our best ambassadors, so please feel free to invite those you know to come learn about Hillside!
Cooking Elective
Some people think that an “elective” is just for fun—but at Hillside we believe in fun while working hard and learning! For example, students certainly enjoyed themselves during Brynne’s cooking elective, but more importantly they learned a variety of food preparations from Brynne and her talented guest chefs. Dishes ranged from bread to dumplings to homemade macaroni and cheese. Additionally, they had to research and complete recipes on their own. As a culminating piece, they hosted the entire school at an International Feast where each student (or pair of students) chose a country and prepared delicious dishes from that culinary tradition. Comfort and confidence in the kitchen is a life-long skill, and these students should be proud of all they accomplished!
Bake Sale Success!
Food preparation was a theme around Hillside this fall! To wrap up learning about the foods, technology, germs, and ideas spread by the Columbian Exchange, the Intermediate students each chose a dish that included Old World and New World ingredients to research. We worked together to prepare them and held a bake sale to benefit recovery efforts from Hurricane Dorian, tying into their weather studies in Science.
Thanks to the very generous students and staff at Hillside we raised $378.25!
Upper School Halloween Party
Prepare for a spooktacle! All Upper Schoolers are invited to attend our yearly Halloween Party. There will be a sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway soon. Get your evil laughs ready!
