What’s Happening at Hillside
Spotlight on…
Mt. St. Helens
Laura and Julie set up a fantastic (and educational)! field trip to Volcano Outdoor School for the Earth Science and Environmental Science classes. Over the two days students learned about ecological impacts of the St. Helens explosion, participated in hands-on activities in mineral formation and town-planning, as well as outdoor activities including hiking and a field survey. Ask any 5th-7th grader what happened on May 18th, 1980, and they can tell you the whole story!
6th Grade Fly-Up
One of our Hillside traditions is to celebrate the growth and accomplishments of our 6th graders as they are on the brink of their next adventures. This is a short ceremony, mainly aimed at the student body of Hillside, but parents and friends are welcome to attend.
Hamlet
The Ancient-Renaissance Literature class has been doing an in-depth exploration of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We were quite taken with the story (and fate) of Ophelia–so much so that some students conducted an Ophelia-themed photo shoot at the Mercer Slough.
Spring Play
The Drama Elective has been hard at work preparing ‘I’ll Leave It To You’ by Noel Coward. Set in the 1920s (created by and originally starring a 20-year old Coward), this drawing room comedy tells the story of the Dermotts, an English family down on its luck; father has recently died, leaving behind his wife and five adult children, without prospects. Wealthy Uncle Daniel arrives from South America to save the day. Evidently dying of a gradual but incurable disease, he promises to leave his entire estate to the child who “makes good” – in short, whoever discovers their gift and “makes their mark” in the months before Uncle Dan’s inevitable demise. Who will succeed…or fail? And is Uncle Dan actually who he says he is? Hijinks ensue.
Graduation
The end of a school year is always bittersweet, especially saying goodbye and wishing good luck to seniors starting on the next step in their journey. Please join us to mark this occasion with our graduation ceremony, followed by a potluck.
Hillside Swag
While we didn’t get any entries for new T-shirts this year, we do have enamel pins! If you would like to sport some Hillside swag on a bag, lapel, or anywhere else, get in touch with Sigrid to buy!
