Marching Towards Deeper Understandings

Students in Middle School English Language Arts are studying the novel Esperanza Rising through the lens of the current border crisis. The novel tells the story of a young Mexican girl’s struggle to adjust to life in the United States. Part of the novel study included a visit one morning from Lizeth, our Assistant Director. She shared with the students her family’s immigrant story coming to the US from Mexico. This discussion helped the students understand the complexities of the border crisis and its influence in the presidential election this coming November. In sum, each student needed to produce a review of the book and gauge the book’s usefulness in teaching about the border crisis. They needed to target their review to an audience of teachers.

Members of the four houses faced the challenge of Name That TuneIn round one, students listened to short segments of popular songs and had to identify the songs on their bingo cards. In the second round, segments of Disney songs made up the playlist. In an usual twist, Sawyer, Tarian, and Ashton held the winning cards in both rounds. Next month the student houses will compete in a brain bowl with questions coming from all of their subject areas.

7th and 8th graders conducted experiments to help design an ideal instant cold pack – minimizing temperature and gas formation.

Our 5th and 6th grade students are also working on sketching live subjects, including our art teacher Leslie’s adorable poodle, Archie!

The 5th and 6th graders are also currently working on extending their reading endurance – which means lots of snuggle time with the Humanities teacher’s dog, Merlin! They were also fortunate enough to take advantage of the good weather, and do some vocabulary practice outside this month.
