Spring Conferences – Friday, March 5. Save the Date!
Spring conferences are coming up, and we are looking forward to meeting with students and parents to discuss classes, the year so far, and what is upcoming. You will receive an email via Jupiter in the coming weeks with the link to sign up for ten minute virtual slots. Just as in November, conferences will be held on Zoom. If you will be unable to attend conferences, please contact teachers individually to make alternate arrangements.
Important Announcement – Re-enrollment
The due date for the re-enrollment forms is Feb. 25/21. An email will be sent to families today via Jupiter.
You’re Invited! Upper School Drama Production

When: Wednesday, February 24th @ 7:30 p.m.
Where: Zoom (link will be provided closer to event date)
Details: Hillside’s Drama Club presents an evening of one-act plays. Ranging from quirky comedy to dark suspense, these short plays explore issues of love, life and death in these uncertain times.
February is Black History Month!
The high school World Literature students are studying, among others, the contemporary Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (who has given some viral TED talks) and Aimé Césaire, a Martiniquan student of Léopold Senghor whose powerful, moving work rivals that of Ginsberg and Whitman and is a force to be reckoned with. Literature students also did comparisons between the recent Youth Laureate Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem and Maya Angelou’s 1993 On the Pulse of the Morning (video linked). James Baldwin, bell hooks, and Ta-Nehisi Coates are just a few other brilliant African-American writers to put on your shelf.
At this week’s Wednesday session, we asked upper school students to choose from a large collection an influential figure or moment of Black history of interest to them and report back next week with their findings. We look forward to hearing what they learn!
Ways to support:
Locally – One simple way to honor the continuing struggle for racial justice is by supporting local Black-owned businesses, of which here are two preliminary lists (Seattle) (Western WA) — if you have more ideas, let us know!
Nationally – The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. at https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/nmaahc-digital-resources-guide is a fantastic resource for information, and includes digital tours!
Lower School Edible Egypt Project
Students in the Alder Room class were quite busy this month – researching and building an ancient Egyptian monument… all out of FOOD! Students created their own edible methods to recreate glue, sand, bricks and more. Check out their awesome monuments below!
