What is happening at Hillside in November…
Spotlight on…
Open House—Thursday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m.
Historically, most cultures celebrate the transition from the season of growth to the dormancy of winter. While we do not live primarily agricultural lives, modern people still feel the urge to gather and recognize the changing season. We hope that Thursday’s Open House can help fulfill that need for our Hillside community! Please join us to celebrate hunkering down for the oncoming winter. Should you know any families perusing school options for their children, invite them to come and learn more about Hillside. We hope to see you there!
From Trash to Geometric Construction…
Monique Catino has put leftover Hillside signs to beautiful artistic use. “I recycled some plastic signage into a “slide-together” geometric construction. The whole structure is about 15 inches high and is pretty sturdy! It is made of 30 identical squares, with slits cut at certain locations…If you want to make your own geometric construction, visit George W. Hart’s website at http://www.georgehart.com, and find complete instructions, as well as many more models, there. Have fun!”
Ancient Burial
The Intermediate students celebrated Halloween by learning about how ancient cultures viewed burial and the afterlife. Each student (or pairs of students) learned about the practices of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, China, Rome, Maya, or the British Isles. We carved mini-pumpkins and then taught each other how those pumpkins would be buried in each of the cultures.
Conferences
Wednesday, November 23rd , we will have our Fall Conferences. There will be no school that day so that we can meet with families. Look for an email from Sigrid with more details and a sign-up link as the date approaches. Like last year, you will meet with a point teacher representing all teachers so that you can have an in-depth conversation. As always, if you want to schedule an individual meeting with any of us, please reach out at any time to set one up.
