Greetings, Hillside families and welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. We hope that all of you have had pleasant, restful summers and that you are looking forward to the start of the new academic year. Here are some important reminders and a calendar of events coming up in September:
The first day of school is Thursday, August 29th. On that day and the next, school will be in session from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be NO ZERO HOUR study hall or biology those two days. There WILL BE VAN service with AM pick-up at the Eastgate Park & Ride around 8:30 a.m.
Monday, September 2nd there is no school for the Labor Day holiday. School resumes on Tuesday, September 3rd at 8 a.m. for the grade 10-11 biology class and for morning study hall. Those not attending study hall or biology begin at 9 a.m. Please note that students arriving before 8:50 a.m. must report to study hall.
All Hillside students are required to have at school their own re-usable water bottles or mugs. Please have your student put his/her name on those items in order to re-unite them when they become separated from their owners.
An important traffic warning: The City of Bellevue started a road project at the end of July which will go until mid-September at the traffic light at Newport Way and 150th AVE SE. Work starts as early as 7:00 AM. They say to expect delays. As this is a route many Hillside Families take, plan accordingly in order to have your students to school on time.
Earlier this month, we sent an incorrect Academic Schedule which conflicted with the individual schedules that were sent out. Here is a link to the corrected schedule: 2013-2014 Academic Schedule.
Finally, Susan maintains the school calendar which is on the website. If you are ever wondering about events or schedules, you should be able to find what you need by looking at the CALENDAR – note that you can change the view from the default monthly calendar to a weekly calendar or list of upcoming events by clicking on the tabs in the upper right hand corner.

First off, Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not To Be made in 1942. In occupied Poland, an acting troupe – led by Jack Benny and Carole Lombard – becomes involved in an attempt to foil a Nazi spy. This amazing movie was released just after the U.S. had entered the Second World War, and its brilliant dark humor and thrills reflect a time of uncertainty and chaos. A side note: the recent Tarantino effort ‘Inglorious Basterds’ was a pretty direct rip-off, and nowhere near as subtle or ingenious.
