Hillside 9th grader Sarah Smale founded Saving Kids’ Sight, an organization promoting awareness and healthcare for other children with glaucoma. She raised over $40,000 to set up a lending library at Duke Eye Center in North Carolina so that patients can “borrow” an Icare (a device that measures eye-pressure and helps patients and their families manage glaucoma). Her work is featured in the Duke Eye Center’s Vision magazine, and you can learn more at her blog. Additionally, you can donate to this cause!

Important Dates:

Thursday the 16th; last day of school

Thursday is a half dayThere are no zero hour classes, and dismissal is at 11:00 AM. The van will still run afterward, but it will be leaving school at 11:00.

Friday the 17th; Upper School Drama Performance

There is the first performance of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth by the Hillside Players at 7:30 that evening.

Saturday the 18th; Graduation, Celebration, Drama, more Celebrations

Like last year, graduation looks a little different than in the past. Graduation takes place at 4 PM on Saturday. In between graduation and the drama performance, we’ll have a community celebration in the main building; it’s pot luck, so bring a favorite dish to share (or just come and celebrate, no judgment here…). Then stick around for the final drama performance if you didn’t already catch Friday’s performance! Traditionally, after the final performance, many of the students pile into the vans for a late night pizza run.

GiveBIG is back!

GiveBIG is back up! Please feel free to donate to Hillside.

Technical Difficulties

As you may have noticed, the giving today has been too big and crashed the GiveBIG Donation website!

The GiveBIG team at the Seattle Foundation wrote: Due to the high volume of generosity for GiveBIG, we are experiencing some technical issues. Our technology partners are working on a resolution. We will post updates as they are available. These issues are also having an impact on your reporting and totals on the site.

Please encourage donors to wait and give later on today if possible. We are working on an update for non-profits to help answer these questions. Thank you for your patience!

I will send you any further updates as we have them, including the site being back up or an extension of the time to give.

I will keep you updated with further information!

Although you can’t donate to GiveBIG, the CustomInk site is still working, though, so feel free to bide your  time by ordering Hillside T-Shirts!

GiveBIG and Represent

Three Things!

Thing One:GiveBigLogo_ICON

Only twenty-four hours are left to GiveBIG to Hillside!

So far, we have several generous donations from members of our Community, but not a large number of donors. By tomorrow night we hope that your name is added to the list!

Any donation amount will increase the amount of stretch funds we receive from The Seattle Foundation. This is your chance to make your gift grow. You can donate to Hillside and any other organization participating in GiveBIG in one transaction, but the time is running out. At 11:59 p.m., the chance is gone. Please consider taking a few moments and a few dollars to help us develop our physical spaces further.

Thing Two:

Hillside Represent! We have a new T-shirt design and several buying options.

Unlike Café Press, CustomInk ships all items to the organization, which allows all students to get their new Hillside shirts at the same time! Students can also bring home shirts for family members, and any other community member can also purchase the new shirts.

This particular design will only be available for order through May 16th, so make sure to order before time runs out.

To buy more than one type of shirt, you will have to visit each link separately, but the orders should all arrive together in late May.

Thing Three:

IMG_5824Final Open House on Thursday

Please join us to welcome new Hillside families and to eat delectable pies made (at least many of them!) by Hillside Community members! In fact, if you would like to volunteer a pie or other tasty treat, please contact Joel. The Open House will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and we always have a good time!

Thank you so much for your attention—and if you think of it this week, celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week with a note to a favorite teacher, past or present.
-Sigrid

May Day History Feast!

IMG_5824May 1st has traditionally been a day of celebration on the northern hemisphere, a time to welcome spring to the land, and often celebrated with feasting. You are invited to join in such a celebration, with Hillside’s annual History Feast!

Tomorrow, 5/1, at 5 p.m., enjoy a medieval feast (Galantine meat and berry pie pictured) and historical personages from Ancient through Renaissance times. We ask for a $15 donation per guest to cover the costs of our supplies.

One Week Until Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6)!

We teachers and staff definitely appreciate you, our Community, and we hope you feel the same towards us. If you do, here are 5 ways to show your appreciation:

1. Tell us!
If you have a chance, send a note, email, phone call, or just stop in to express your support for the Hillside teachers. Thankfully, our wonderful community allows us to feel connected to our students’ families, but I assure you, a word of appreciation brightens our days.
2. Tell others!
In the age of digital investigation, online ratings/comments are often the way that families learn about our school. Several families have already reviewed Hillside, and I honestly got teary and humble reading the reviews Screen Shot 2016-04-24 at 9.24.25 AMpeople have written. If you have not yet reviewed us, please consider taking ten minutes and doing so. The same review can be used for multiple sites, making it even easier for you. To add a Google Review, google “Hillside Student Community School” and click on the “Write a Review” that will be on the right-hand side (where the red arrow is on the picture to the right).
Here are links to other review sites that prospective families use:
Great Schools
Niche.com
Private School Review
Local School Directory
Yelp
3. Give (even a little) for GiveBIGGiveBigLogo_ICON
This year, you can donate any time from now through 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday 5/3/16, and have your donation count for our GiveBIG total! Each donation, no matter the size, adds to our “stretch funds” from the Seattle Foundation. We are hoping to use these funds to continue our development of Hillside’s physical spaces.
4. Feast!
Teacher Appreciation week should, for Hillside, actually start on Sunday, 5/1, with the annual History Feast. This year, notable figures from Ancient through Medeival History will meet and discourse. Who would want to miss that? It will be in the gym at 5:30 p.m.
5. Hang Out!
The final Open House of this school year is Thursday, 5/5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. We aim to celebrate the close of the GiveBIG fundraiser, as well as to welcome our new families for 2016-2017.

GiveBIG 2016

As your friends with students at other schools frantically plan auctions or pound the pavement to sell some sort of food, don’t you breathe a sigh of relief that you have a student at Hillside? We understand your time is valuable and that each member of our community has different commitments. This means that our fundraising is voluntary, and does not require any sort of costume or even leaving the house!

For the third year, Hillside is joining other area non-profits for the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG Fundraiser. We are planning to use our GiveBIG funds to continue the development of our physical spaces here on campus.

Number of Donors Counts
Every donation (small or large) qualifies us for MORE money from the Seattle GiveBigLogo_ICONFoundation, which gives “stretch” funds for each non-profit based on the number of donors as well as the amount of the donation. This means that every donation helps us earn stretch funds, no matter what the amount is.

Give Early!
While May 3 is THE DAY for GiveBIG, this year you can donate early, freeing you of the time-pressure of remembering on the actual day! Starting today, 4/18, you may give your gift and have it count for our GiveBIG donation. Not only will this lessen the pressure on May 3rd, but it should help nudge others to remember their gift as well.

More than Hillside!
This year you can donate to multiple non-profits through one transaction, instead of making individual gifts to each. This should streamline your time as you give to Hillside as well as other favorite organizations.

While we do not have an auction, we do have chances to gather at our Open Houses. This year’s final Open House is on May 5th, two days after GiveBIG. We would love for you to join us to meet new students and their families as well as celebrating this year’s GiveBIG campaign.
