Here’s What’s Happening at Hillside in June

Spotlight On

GiveBIG

Thank you to everyone who participated in GiveBIG on May 5th! We raised over eight thousand dollars, and are excited to put your generosity to work around the school over the summer.

NAMI walk with Julie, June 6th

Mental health is an essential part of a healthy life, but it is often neglected due to ignorance, stigma, or lack of available resources. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. To support their work, Julie is going to participate in their Seattle area walk and would greatly appreciate any donations to NAMI or anyone who would like to join her in the walk. Bake Sale to support Braille Without Bordershomepage_top

The Intermediate classes are currently reading My Path Leads to Tibet, an autobiographical account of how Sabriye Tenberken, a blind German woman, travelled on her own to Tibet to start a school for blind children. Tenberken developed the Braille alphabet for Tibetan and organized her school to teach students self-reliance and other skills allowing them to integrate into Tibetan society as equals, rather than as marginalized citizens. In 2002 Tenberken and her partner, Paul Kronenberg, established Braille Without Borders, an international organization striving to bring literacy, and therefore knowledge and power, to the blind, giving them necessary tools for independence and societal engagement. We in the Intermediate classroom are impressed with her passion and dedication. To show our admiration, we are going to have a bake sale and send the proceeds to Braille Without Borders.
